Although Dylan was born in in Los Angles, Dylan spent his first ten years growing up in Africa, India and Indonesia, as both parents were in the Foreign Service. After his tenth birthday, his family settled in Annandale, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. He made his professional acting debut while still in high school, appearing with such prestigious Washington theatre companies as the Arena Stage and the Studio Theatre. He became an English major at the University of Virginia but spent most of his time there acting in the theatre department. During his summers, he performed with the Heritage Repertory Company in such plays as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Curse of the Starving Class, Romeo and Juliet, Death of a Salesman and Our Town.

Dylan made his film debut in John Boorman's Where the Heart Is and has since appeared in Betsy's Wedding, Loverboy, Radio Inside, Arctic Blue and Eden. He has appeared on television in Gabriel's Fire, starring opposite James Earl Jones, the CBS after school special Soldier's Boy and the CBS mini-series Telling Secrets.
