Matthew was born in New York City.  Matthew got into acting at the New York's upper crust Walden School after being sidelined from his athletic pursuits (football and soccer) by a knee injury.  His Father, the late James Broderick, got him a stage debut at the age of 17, in a workshop production of the play On Valentine's Day.

Matthew had his first big screen success in 1983, with the light comedy WarGames (1983).  Two years later he was in the film Ladyhawke with Rutger Hauer, playing the part of Philipe Gastone, a thief, who escapes from the dungeon at Aquila, sparking a manhunt.
