Max was born to a middle-class family on April 10, 1929 in Lund, southern Sweden . Both of his parents were from the world of academics. As a child, Max was very shy, and like so many other actors, turned to acting. At age fifteen, he and his fellow high school students saw a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Encouraged by this performance, von Sydow and his friends formed an amateur theatre group, and they began performing the works of August Strindberg and [Hjalmar] Bergman. When he graduated from high school, von Sydow spent a year doing mandatory military service. His rank: Quartermaster. From 1948 to 1951, von Sydow was a student at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre.
Max made his feature film debut as Nils in Only a Mother. This opportunity came after a rejection from none other than Ingmar Bergman, who was casting extras for his film Prison.
The film, Flash Gordon had Max playing the part of The Emperor Ming.
